Catalog Partnerships

A Catalog Partnership links your tags and categories with one or more other Comaney users. Once a partnership is active, any tag or category that anyone in the group creates, renames, or deletes is instantly reflected in everyone else's account. You all work with the same labels without having to copy your setup manually.

Good fit for: couples managing household spending together, flatmates tracking shared costs in a project, or any two people who regularly split expenses and want their categories and tags to match.

Requirements

  • You must already be connected to the person you want to invite: either as a direct buddy or as a member of the same project.
  • Each person can belong to only one Catalog Partnership at a time.

Inviting someone to a partnership

You can send a partnership invite from two places:

  • My Buddies: find the person in your buddy list, click the ··· menu next to their name, and choose Invite as partner.
  • Project manage page: go to the Manage tab of a project, find a member, click ···, and choose Invite as partner.

The option only appears if the person is a real Comaney user (not an offline buddy), is not already your partner, and is not in another partnership.

A confirmation pop-up explains what the partnership will do. Click Send invite to proceed. The other person receives an email and a badge appears next to Categories & Tags in their navigation menu.

Receiving an invitation

When someone sends you a partnership invite:

  • A card appears at the top of your Categories & Tags page with Accept and Reject buttons.
  • A reminder pop-up (the stoerer) appears on other pages while you have a pending invite, so it is easy to come back without losing track of it.

Clicking Reject cancels the invitation and nothing changes in your account. The person who invited you is notified.

Clicking Accept opens the setup wizard.

The setup wizard

The wizard runs once when you join a partnership. It maps your existing tags and categories to your partner's, so everything lines up before syncing starts.

Step 1: Introduction

A brief explanation of what is about to happen and who invited you. From here you can:

  • Click Next to continue.
  • Click Later to save your progress and come back to it whenever you like. The reminder pop-up will keep appearing so you do not forget.
  • Click I don't want a partnership to decline the invitation entirely.

Step 2: Map your tags

For each of your existing tags, choose what happens to it:

  • Tags that already match a name in your partner's catalog are matched automatically. These rows are shown greyed out and need no action.
  • Unmatched tags need a decision: either pick the equivalent tag from your partner's list using the dropdown, or tick Drop to remove that tag from your existing expenses.

Not sure what maps to what? Click Let AI decide and Comaney will suggest a mapping based on the tag names. You can review and adjust every suggestion before anything is changed.

The wizard will not let you proceed until every unmatched tag has a decision.

Step 3: Map your categories

The same process as step 2, but for categories.

Step 4: Review and apply

A summary shows you exactly how many tags and categories will be remapped or dropped. When you are happy, click Apply and finish.

What happens on apply:

  1. All your existing expenses are updated: tags and categories are swapped to the new mapped values, and dropped ones are removed.
  2. Your catalog is replaced with your partner's full catalog, so you both start with identical lists.
  3. Syncing becomes live.

You can go back to any previous step using the Back button. Clicking Later at any point saves your progress so you can pick up where you left off.

How sync works after setup

Once everyone in the partnership has finished the wizard, changes made by any partner apply to all others immediately:

Action What happens for everyone else
Create a tag or category It appears in all partners' catalogs
Rename a tag or category The new name is updated everywhere
Delete a tag or category It is removed from all partners' catalogs and from the expenses that used it

A banner at the top of the Categories & Tags page reminds you that you are in a partnership, so you always know that your changes affect others. The delete confirmation dialog also makes this explicit.

Inviting more people

You can grow a partnership by inviting more people using the same Invite as partner button. Each new person goes through the wizard before they start syncing. While someone is going through the wizard, changes you make to your catalog are not synced to them yet. When they finish, they get a fresh snapshot of the current catalog.

Managing your partners

On your Categories & Tags page, scroll down to the Catalog Partners section. It lists everyone in the partnership and their current status:

Status Meaning
Pending Invite sent; the person has not opened the wizard yet
Onboarding The wizard has been started but not finished
Active Setup complete; syncing is live

Removing a partner

Click the Kick button next to their name. After a confirmation, they are removed from the partnership. They keep a copy of the catalog as it was at that moment, but changes will no longer sync between you.

The removed person and everyone else in the partnership receive a notification.

Leaving the partnership yourself

Click Leave partnership at the bottom of the Catalog Partners section. After confirmation, you are removed and keep your current catalog. Everyone remaining in the partnership is notified.

Automatic removal

If you and another partner lose all connection — meaning you no longer share a buddy link or a project — Comaney automatically removes you from the partnership. The remaining partners are notified. You keep your catalog as it was.

Notification settings

You can choose which partnership events send you an email. Go to Account Settings and look under Email notifications:

Toggle What it covers
Catalog Partnership events affecting you Invite received, your invite was accepted or declined, you were removed
Catalog Partnership events affecting others A partner joined, left, or was removed from your partnership

See Account & Settings for more on how notification settings work.
