Adding Buddies

Go to Buddies in the navigation, then My Buddies to manage all your connections.

Offline buddy

An offline buddy is someone who does not use Comaney. You just give them a name. Only you can see the balance and only you can track expenses for them. Comaney cannot contact them automatically.

To add one:

1. Go to My Buddies.
2. Under Add an offline buddy, type a name and click Add.

The buddy appears in your list straight away.

Want to link their Comaney account later? If the person eventually signs up, you can connect their account to the existing entry so the full expense history carries over. See Merging an offline buddy into another connection below.

Inviting another Comaney user

For one-on-one expense sharing with someone who already has (or will create) a Comaney account.

To send an invitation:

1. Go to My Buddies.
2. Under Invite a buddy, enter their email address and click Send invite.

They receive an email with a link. Once they click Accept, you are connected and can share expenses.

• The invitation expires after 7 days.
• You can revoke a pending invitation at any time from My Buddies under "Buddy invitations you sent".
• If the email address is not yet registered, Comaney sends them a sign-up link instead. They are automatically linked to you once they create their account.

Receiving an invitation: If someone invites you, you will see it under Pending Invitations on the My Buddies page. Click Accept to connect or Decline to ignore it.

Inviting a fellow project member directly

If you already share a project with someone, you can invite them as a direct buddy without typing their email.

To do this:

1. Go to the project's Settings tab.
2. Find their name in the member list and click ···.
3. Choose Invite as direct buddy.

This works for any member, not just the project admin. The option only appears if you are not already buddies and you do not already have a pending invite to them. The same menu may also offer Invite as partner - see Catalog Partnerships.

Merging an offline buddy into another connection

You can combine an offline buddy's history with another entry, either because they turn out to be the same person as someone else, or because they now have a real Comaney account.

Merging two offline buddies together:

1. On My Buddies, click ··· next to the offline buddy and choose Merge into....
2. Pick the other offline buddy from the list and click Merge.
3. Confirm. This happens right away and cannot be undone: the shared expense history of both entries is combined into the one you merged into, and the one you started from disappears.

Merging an offline buddy into a real Comaney account:

This only works once the person is already connected to you, either as a direct buddy (see Inviting another Comaney user above) or as a fellow project member.

1. On My Buddies, click ··· next to the offline buddy and choose Merge into....
2. Pick the connected person from the list and click Merge.
3. Confirm. They receive an email and a notification asking them to approve the merge. Once they accept, the offline buddy's expense history moves to their real account and the offline entry disappears.

Merging an offline buddy into yourself:

Sometimes you realize the expenses you tracked under an offline buddy were actually your own all along.

1. On My Buddies, click ··· next to the offline buddy and choose Merge into....
2. Pick Yourself from the list and click Merge.
3. Confirm. This happens right away, with no approval needed. The offline buddy disappears, and any expenses you had split with them become fully yours - they stop being shared at all.

For an offline project member (admin only): the same Merge into... option appears on the project's Settings tab, listing the project's other offline members and its real members. If you choose a real member, the pending request shows up for them on that same project page, not on My Buddies.
